Losing

Last week, I went to a nearby old town with a friend to walk the ancient streets and enjoy Turkish sun as it melted our skin to match the sandy tones of the houses. We found a good parking location outside of the narrow main street in the old town.

Walking upwards, we saw a man feeding his many chickens and also his cats.

One of those had blue and green eyes sharing his feline face peacefully.

We played a little with them and took some photos for novelty. We kept climbing upwards and saw a very pure water fountain as a striking contrast to the dry throat we had developed.

We indulged in the refreshing feast. The houses architecture gave willing witness of the community history and the small wooden doors kept the intimate stories guarded from curious onlookers like us.

After half an hour, we arrived at the main street, which was equally hot and busy.

Vendors were actively calling out their merchandise, “eskici geldi, eskici!” while everyone was oblivious to the heat.

There was a sense of direction and purpose even from the ones begging for people to buy the warm water bottles, to the ones selling nuts and soaps.

After taking several videos of curious scenery to upload on social media and enjoying a visit to a second-floor library with old rock walls, we went in search of coffee.

After a while, I noticed that my handy cellphone was no longer in proximity to my body. Quickly, I went to retrace the steps we had walked in a span of 30 minutes, and as I recalled, to where I last remember accessing Google maps in search of a particular location. Three stores and a couple of anxious conversations left us puzzled as to how and where the phone had been dropped or taken from my pockets.

Immediately, all the possibilities were quickly surveyed and we went to the police station to fill the required documentation.

Then comes the days after the event, with the consequences of interruptions of routine to amend the loss and communicate to those linked to me for ways to contact me.

All the planning that goes into developing a structured and organized life, interrupted and bent over backwards in less than an hour.

Progressively, the ways of thinking are challenged as we decide to exert more faith and hope than on previous occasions where similar events have occurred.

We gravitate to magnify our mistakes instead of causalities beyond our scope.

What are the forces that compel us to continue and slowly luster our circumstance and distillate wisdom from these moments?

Losses are often beyond our control. It is not the few drops of milk we dropped on the floor that we could buy again from the store, it is not the verbal offense we received that could be amended by reaching out and looking for restitution, it is not the opportunity that we missed to take the required exam by our distracted diligence and timing.

We could apply again somewhere else we think, and often do successfully.

And these are tangible and quantifiable things.

Where the loss is that of relationships and people who once were in our lives and now are not, the panorama gets filled with fog, a vague memory, an imperfect memory of only good times experienced or a magnification of the uncomfortable moments and angry arguments is what we often recall.

Even on those losses, if we bother to remove a frail leaf from tree of bitterness, new healthy leaves sprout.

With time.

And this is the welcoming healer for many of the uncontrollable things near us.

Knowing that the Giant will not move a centimeter and understating that we need to walk alongside him at his pace.

It is with this open wound that we sleep and find that it is slowly healing in the morning until we forget we were ever wounded.

When our memory reminds us, we can see more clearly the hope we have found rather than the void of what we have lost.
