“ORADA HİÇBİR ŞEY YOK”
Birkaç yıl önce, Batman, Türkiye'yi ziyaret etmemi sağlayan cümle buydu.
Porto Riko’dan geliyorum.
Mardin'den Van'a gidiyordum ve saat geç olduğu için otobüstekilere “geceyi Batman’da geçirelim mi?” diye sordum.
Dikkatsiz cevapları beni meraklandırdı.
Şehirle ilgili merakımı uyandırdığı için tam tersi etki yaptı.
Meraklı biri olduğum için otobüsten indim ve mesaisini bitirdikten sonra beni Batman Müzesine götürme nezaketini gösteren en iyi arkadaşım Ahmet ile yaptığım en yakında bulunan Real Konak Hoteli aradım.
O zaman, Batman'da sadece bir gün geçirdim ve yolculuğuma ancak bir yıl sonra geri dönmek için devam ettim.
Sonra tekrar bu yıl şehri ve Doğu Türkiye'yi keşfetmeye devam etmek için beş ayımı Batman’da geçirdim.
Şehirde uzun bir gün geçirdikten, ana ticaret caddesi boyunca yürüdükten, farklı restoranlara gittikten, çatı terasında müzik keyfi yaptıktan veya bir dağa tırmanmaya zaman ayırdıktan sonra, bu şehri tavsiye etmeyecek bir kişinin sadece bir insan olduğunu anladım.
Sadece sıkıcı insanlar burayı tavsiye edemezdi.
Özellikle hava kalitesi, yürünebilir alanlar ve trafik lojistiğinin iyileştirilmesi başta olmak üzere, kamusal yaşam koşulları açısından yapılması gereken iyileştirmeler olduğunu anlasam da, yerli ve yabancılar tarafından da deneyimlenmeyi bekleyen bir başka yön daha var.
Acaba şehirde herkes çarşı meyve suyu standında taze havuç veya portakal suyu içmiş mi?
Yol kenarında arkadaşlarıyla çay içip muhteşem turuncu ve kırmızımsı tonlarıyla gün batımını izlemiş, parklarda yürüyüş yapmanın keyfini çıkarmış olabilir mi?
Sokaklarda daha az şanslı olanlar için merhametle ucuz bir ürün satın almışlar mı?
Belki de tercih ettikleri takıma tezahürat yapmak için futbol stadyumuna bile gitmemişlerdir, şehrin yüzme havuzuna ya da tenis kortuna bile gitmemişlerdir.
Tüm bu aktivitelerden zevk aldığım ve yapmaya devam ettiğim için kendimi şanslı hissediyorum.
Batman, Yukarı Dicle Nehri'nde 12.000 yıl öncesine dayanan etkileyici keşifleri açık bir şekilde anlatan Batman Müzesi'ne sahip olmasının yanı sıra, çevre ilçeler için de mükemmel bir turizm merkezidir.
Siirt, Mardin, Diyarbakır, Midyat, Hasankeyf, Şanlıurfa, Van ve hatta Hatay gibi ilçelere yakınlığı, maceraperest veya bilim gezgini için cezp edicidir.
Bu, korumaya ve keşfedilmeye değer eski bir antik geçmişe sahip genç bir şehirdir.
Herhangi bir şehrin en eşsiz hazinesi, insanları ve bireysel olarak gelişmek için nasıl mücadele ettikleridir.
Bu yönüyle ilgili olarak, burada bulunacak çok şey var.

“THERE İS NOTHİNG THERE”
A couple of years ago, that was the phrase that made me visit Batman, Turkey. I come from Puerto Rico. I was traveling from Mardin to Van and as it was getting late, I asked to people on the bus if should spend the night in Batman.
Their careless reply made me curious.
It had the opposite effect as it sparkled my curiosity about the city. Being the inquisitive person that I am, I got off the bus and looked for the nearest hotel (Real Konak Hotel) where I made my best friend (Ahmet) who had the kindness to take me to the Batman museum after he finished his work shift.
On that time, I only spent one day in Batman and continued my journey only to return a year later, and then again this year where I’m spending five months to keep exploring the city and discovering Eastern Turkey, keeping Batman as my pivot foothold.
After spending many days in the city, walking along its main commercial avenue, going to different restaurants, enjoying music on a rooftop terrace or taking the time to climb a mountain, I found that a person who would not recommend this city, is simply a boring person.
While I understand there is improvement to be done in terms of public living conditions, especially on improving the quality of air, walkable areas and traffic logistics, there is another side which waits to be experienced by local and foreigners as well.
I wonder if everyone in the city has enjoyed a fresh carrot or orange juice on the bazaar juice stand, if they had tea with friends on a road stop and watched the sunset with its amazing orange and reddish hues, enjoyed walking on the several parks in the evening or if they had bought a cheap product in compassion for the less fortunate on the streets.
Maybe they had not even been to the football stadium to cheer their preferred team nor been in the city swimming pool or tennis court.
I feel lucky to have enjoy all those activities and continue to do so.
Besides having the relevant Batman Museum that clearly explain the impressive discoveries in the Upper Tigris River dating back to 12,000 years ago, Batman is a perfect tourism hub for nearby towns as well.
The proximity to towns such as Siirt, Mardin, Diyarbakır, Midyat, Hasankeyf, Sanliurfa, Van or even Hatay, is enticing to any adventurous or scientific traveller.
This is a young city with an old ancient past worthy of preservation and exploration.
The most unique treasure of any city is its people, and how they struggle for improvement on an individual basis. Concerning this aspect, there is much to be found here.
